Rebecca Sugar and her team somehow found a way to please both the fans who think Steven Universe should have ended at “Change Your Mind” and the fans who were longing for more of the show since the movie. Steven Universe: Future aims to be a epilogue with the end goal of tieing up loose plot threads and giving us one final story to enjoy before the show possibly ends for good. There are some key details, however, that you can not get out of the twenty second beautifully animated intro (which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/mzj9y4k04F0) so I have decided to compile everything we know of this series (besides what is in the intro animation).
Firstly, it is important to get out there that this is not a season 6 of Steven Universe. The Steven Universe we’ve known since 2013 ended with the forty-five minute special “Change Your Mind”, according to Ian JQ (Steven Universe show planner and OK. K.O.! creator). However, there is some conflict which has yet to be resolved; will this be a full on sequel series ala Naruto Shippuden or just a short epilogue consisting of a few episodes? There seems to be valid evidence for both, but I am leaning towards a short epilogue.
Ian JQ refers to Steven Universe: Future as “a sequel/epilogue series”, comparing it to Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. Wether intentional or not, the phrasing makes it seem as if this will be it’s own new series with a couple of seasons. Cartoon Network’s Twitter meanwhile describes the series using terms such as “limited series”. There are various probabilities for what this could mean, but I have two. One would be that when comparing this series to Naruto Shippuden, Ian JQ meant it in terms of the characters being older and the plot being different then what was ever intended for the original series. This means the series would still be limited with a few episodes before ending for good. The other possibility is that Cartoon Network used the term “limited” in the same way as they did for Infinity Train to where they act like this is a one and done thing but suprise us with the announcement of more. There is nothing we can do but wait and see, although the press releases point to this being a one season limited series as Cartoon Network promised.
In the middle of all this confusion, we have gotten an offical tease for what the plot will consist of: “After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own.” This lines up with Zach Callison (voice actor of Steven Universe) commenting on how Steven will go through a phase very simalar to his own, being a form of depression/self discovery. That’s right- it is possible we could see Steven go through depression, which is something I am certainly not ready for. Aside from this, it seems there will be another main plot consisting of villains such as Jasper (and Aqua Marine fused with a Ruby?) as teased in the opening of the series.
Are you excited for Steven Universe: Future regardless of what it is? Let me know on Twitter or the comments below, and look forward for the primere coming later this year!
